Louisville VineMeeters were a part of Churchill Downs Spring Meet, just days after a tornado struck the back lot.

Despite the spectacular loss of Horse #2 in the 4th race, a WONDERFUL time was had by all!  Read the articles for more details of the Spring Meet, and start planning for the Fall Meet, which begins in October.

Doesn't it make us feel special that we were a part of Churchill Downs activities?

My final article about our trip to Kentucky. We were on the road for about 10 hours each way, which gave me lots of time to take some pictures of the sights. I took lots but am only showing you the best or most interesting.

We had wonderful weather for our travels both to and from Kentucky, Which made our Vinemeet trip even better!

  • Glacier Run is the newest exhibit at the Louisville Zoo, slated to open this spring! The exhibit is modeled after the town of Churchill, Canada, the polar bear capital of the world, and contains the 26 year old polar bear Arki. Also within the exhibit is the zoo's grizzly bear and her two cubs!

Visit the Louisville Zoo during the VineMeet, June 24-26, 2011!

The official VineMeet hotel is the Wingate by Wyndham hotel, located at Blankenbaker Crossings on the east side of Louisville.  Close to many services and some of Louisville's finest dining experiences, the Wingate offers many amenities at the hotel, both for hotel guests, and for our VineMeet!

We have a special group rate!  To take advantage of the special group rate, please CALLto make your reservation, and let the desk know that you are booking a room as a part of the block reserved for the Louisville VineMeet.  That phone number is:

    502-261-0644

If you prefer other accommodations, there are other hotels in the immediate vicinity that are within walking distance of our official hotel.  These other accommodations may be found on our web site:  Louisville VineMeet 2011

    FUN Group Activities

We have all kinds of fun things to do!  We can get discounted group rates for many activities, but we must reach a minimum of registrants to take advantage of the discounted rates.  We can not make reservations, (with any guarantee of success), after May 1, 2011, so please, register as soon as you can to participate in the group fun!  All activities are handicap accessible!

Check In - Check In begins at 2:00 pm at the Bluegrass room at the hotel.  When you check in, you'll receive a lovely GIFT BAG, with Kentucky-themed gifts!  You'll also receive an official VineMeet T shirt, tickets to the activities that you've purchased, and will be registered to win some of our wonderful door prizes!  Feel free to hang around until the official Meet and Greet below, as I love company!  Special music will be played for the duration of the day and evening, (got to get some use out of all that music on my computer...), AND our theme will be Horses and Horse Racing-- so be prepared for lots of roses, horses, jockies, and even games with a horse-racing theme!

Meet and Greet - Our fun time starts at 5:00 pm on June 24, 2011 at the Wingate by Wyndham hotel!  We will be in the Bluegrass Room-- which can accommodate up to 80 people, so we will have plenty of room.  Wifi is available in the room, and the hotel has two computers available for guest usage.  Snacks and soft drinks will be served, and you are welcome to bring your own beverage if you prefer something a little stronger.  A Kid's Kamping Section will be provided, so that children who attend the VineMeet will have their own games and other activities!  Kids will also receive a gift bag suitable for their age!

Make Your Own Derby Hat- Attendees will be able to design their very own Derby Hat for the festivities!  We'll have base hats, ribbons, flowers, and other unique goodies to glue to your hat, glue guns, inspirational posters, and lots of accouterments for your hat!  At 10:00 pm, we'll have a contest and award prizes for the best hats!  Will you win?  Lots of awards and lots of fun to be had!

Dinner - Our dinner will be catered by Bootleg Barbeque, one of Louisville's favorite Barbecue Joints, specializing in the closest thing to Daviess County Barbeque, (my home county, and, frankly, THE BEST), that you can get outside of Daviess County!  The meal will include two barbeque meats, (chicken, pork, or beef), vegetables, salad, and deserts!

Entertainment - If I can possibly arrange it, we'll have entertainment that evening!  Don't worry, I'll come up with something neat!  But, all activity ceases at 10 PM for our Derby Hat Contest!  So don't forget-- Be There or Be Square!

Kentucky Derby Museum - The Kentucky Derby Museum is a fascinating insider's look at the world-famous Kentucky Derby, and the perfect prelude to our afternoon of fun!  The museum offers many unique and interactive exhibits about the Derby-- you can 'call' your own race, 'ride' a winner, and immerse yourself in Kentucky's multi-million dollar horse racing industry.  There are three very special tours available, as well-- the Historic Walking Tour, which takes place around the museum, and explains some of the wonderful buildings, statues, and famous memorabilia of the Derby, the Behind-the-Scenes Walking Tour, which takes you to the tracks back side to see the inner workings of a day at the races, (with HORSES), and the Barn and Backside Van Tour, which takes you to the back side of the track to see horses, the barn, the farriers, and many other goodies from the comfort of a van!  I guarantee that you'll have lots of fun!  Admission tickets are only $9.00 per adult, and we need 20 people to take advantage of the group rate.  Tour tickets are $10 per person, and no minimum is required, as this is a part of the regular museum activities.

Churchill Downs Skye Terrace on Millionaire's Row - After the museum, we're going to the famous Millionaire's Row at Churchill Downs.  A lovely buffet-style luncheon will be served, and you can place your bets, see the races, and hopefully, collect your winnings in the comfort and style reserved for genuine millionaires during the Derby.  (These seats sell for upwards of $5,000 to $10,000 each during the Derby.)  A once-in-a-lifetime experience, you can go down to see the horses before the run, watch the race from the balcony, or from the closed-circuit TV, enjoy your favorite beverages and snacks, and have a wonderful time!  Tickets for this activity are only $33.50 per person, and we need 20 people to take advantage of the group rate!

Louisville Zoo - Not interested in horses?  Feel that it isn't suitable for children?  You and your family and friends can go to the Louisville Zoo at a discounted rate, available through the Louisville Water Company, my employer, (thank you LWC).  The zoo offers a full day of activities, or, you can attend the Kentucky Derby Museum in the morning and the zoo in the afternoon.  There are over 1,000 animals at the zoo, all cared for in habitats that are similar to their native habitats!  A fabulous NEW feature is Glacier Run Exhibit, dedicated to animals that live in Arctic and Antarctic areas.  There are also exhibits of Australia, Africa, mountains, and a fabulous herpetarium!  Admission tickets are only $10 for adults and $7.50 for children!

Saturday Dinner - Make a reservation on Friday Evening for a place at one of Louisville's finest restaurants!  You can go whole hog, and experience the finest of gourmet dinners, or dine in a more modest setting.  Sign-up sheets will be availabe at Check In, and we'll make reservations for groups of 12 or less.  Restaurants will include:

Lynn's Paradise Cafe- A unique dining experience!  Lynne's specialty is gourmet Bourbon French Toast, but there are plenty of other menu items, as well!  Lynn's decorating is a bit, uh, different, but absolutely fascinating and entertaining, to boot!  (Like to eat with manequin legs dressed in wild and crazy pants with a 70's flare?  Like riotous flowers?  Like Ugly Lamps?  Lynn's got 'em!)

Kingfish Restaurant - Located on the beautiful Ohio River, Louisville's Kingfish Restaurant offers fabulous seafood and a wonderful ambiance along the river.  Be sure to sit on the patio in fine weather, to watch the pleasure craft and barges as they travel along the magnificent Ohio River!  A large open area is available for kids to play in while you wait!  You'll enjoy the many seafood treats, as well as other non-seafood menu items, as well!

Captain's Quarters Riverside Dining - Captain's Quarters is one of Louisville's most famous restaurants!  Located at the mouth of Harrods Creek on the Ohio River, Captain's Quarters offers a wonderful menu of seafood, steaks, and other dishes.  Take your pick of eating on their famous tiered patio or inside the open-style dining room.  While dining, you can see the fabulous yachts and boats dock, disgorging hungry Louisville residents at the restaurant!  The lights and the view of the river in the evening is truly fabulous-- and you'll be able to relax and enjoy the river ambiance!

Cunnigham's Creekside Inn - For more modest prices, yet just as much fun, Cunningham's Creekside Inn at Harrods Creek is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy delicious food!  Yachts and other pleasure craft frequently tie up at the dock on the lower level, and another level of deck is available, too.  The food is truly delicious, more down-home cooking, and their fish sandwich is wonderful!  Or try their famous bratwurst and bean soup!  Alcoholic beverages are also available!

Jack Fry's Restaurant and Piano Bar - For a taste of "Old Louisville", visit Jack Fry's!  The restaurant is one of Louisville's finest, and has been voted Louisville's Best Restaurant for a Romantic Dinner!  The walls are decorated by famous guests that have dined there in the past-- including Bert Lahr, the Cowardly Lion, Mohammed Ali and other boxing greats, and many Old Hollywood personages.  The food is gourmet, but most are priced under $20.  The ambiance is special-- you'll have a wonderful time!

KT's Restaurant and Bar - Also known as the old Kentucky Tavern, KT's is a great place for family dining, as well as a place for special celebrations!  Their specially baked croissants with honey butter are To Die For, and their steaks are tender, juicy, and, frankly, wonderful!  You'll enjoy the ambiance, as well as the good food!

Ghost and Historic Tours of Old Louisville - Saturday evening!  Ghost and Historic Tours of Old Louisville - Two tours will be offered to VineMeet registrants-- and they are by special reservation, so be sure to REGISTER and PURCHASE YOUR TICKETS!  The walking tour requires 20 people.  This tour begins in Old Louisville and is a walking tour of Louisville Landmarks downtown, as well as a Ghost Component, as our tour guide has a reputation for being a bit spooky-- but not frighteningly so!  The Van Tour requires 12 people.  This tour is by van, and will include sites of Old Louisville architecture and areas populated by recorded ghosts...  But don't be scared!  Tickets for the Ghost Walking Tour are $6 per person.  Tickets for the Historic Ghost Van Tour are $25 per person.  We may be able to arrange a special stop for Louisville Famous Chocolate Bourbon Balls!

For Kids! Puzzle's Fun Dome and Babysitting Services -  A special 'field trip' of Puzzle's Fun Dome will be arranged for kids, with a baby sitter, if you wish to attend the Skye Terrace, but don't wish to take your children!  Also, a baby sitter will be available Saturday Night, if you want to partake of more 'adult' activities.  More information is available at our web site, linked above!  Puzzle's Fun Dome and Baby sitting is limited to 10 children.  The baby sitter is my daughter-- who will have graduated from college with a specialty of Play Therapy.  Don't worry, no one will be analyzed, but all will be highly entertained!  Tickets to the Fun Dome are $35 per child, and babysitting rates are $5 per child, per hour.

Louisville Slugger Museum - Visit the museum and factory of the famous Louisville Slugger Sunday afternoon, beginning at noon and ending at 1:30 pm!  The museum has many fun and interactive exhibits, art work, and all kinds of baseball memorabilia-- Fun for everyone!  You can even purchase your very own full size Louisville Slugger bat at the museum!  (I plan to provide a miniature slugger bat in our gift bags, if enough of us register!)  We need 20 people to qualify for the group rate, and tickets are $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $4 to $6 for children!

Golf Outing at Long Run Golf Course - Early Sunday morning, "goofers" are invited to play 9 holes of golf at the lovely Long Run Golf Course in just about 5 miles from the hotel!  Long Run Golf Course is a lovely course, designed for both relaxing fun and challenging shots!  The group will be led by my dear husband, who loves to golf.  Tickets are $14.25, and cart rental, (recommended), is $24 for a double and $14 for a single!

Belle of Louisville Afternoon Cruise - Spend a wonderful, relaxing afternoon cruising on the famous Belle of Louisville!  The oldest steam boat in the US, and the ONLY boat powered soley by steam, the Belle of Louisville offers a step back in time, to easier days, when travel was by riverboat!  The afternoon excursion can include lunch, or just the cruise-- whatever your pocketbook prefers!  The 2 hour cruise travels from the downtown dock, past the historic Louisville Water Company water tower, all the way upstream past Prospect, KY.  You'll have a wonderful afternoon, watching the river and the pleasure craft!  Tour the workings of the boat in small groups, too!

    Please Help Me Plan

Our website has a form for you to fill out if you are interested in attending. It does not mean that you WILL be there, it just means that you are wanting to be there and will be there if you can. With this information, I can plan the group activities and can make arrangements-- AND, I'll know if I need to buy 30 gift bags or 100...

The information on the form will be seen by no one but me. I'm not good at web site design, but I have up-graded, and the whole site is Members Only. Please log in to see the rest! Also, our security is so good, even I can't find it, so you're safe! :-)

You can contact me in three ways at this time, either by the Contact Author button here on NewsVine, the Contact section of the website, or via the Vinemeet forum. Additional contact information will be available at a later date. Questions may be asked and answered, as quickly as possible! Please give me a few hours to get back to you-- I'm working, taking care of my family, getting calls and emails from our activities, etc. I'll do my best to respond in a timely manner!

Details and questions about specific activities may be answered by their web pages, which are referenced in the articles pertaining to them on our VineMeet group page. These pages are also referenced from our website, so you can find them quickly and easily. You may notice that some of their web pages linked to the articles are not up to date to June, which has been frustrating for me, too!

Don't forget our website and information form: VineMeet, 2011. Please fill out the form so I have an idea if you're planning to attend! Again, please submit the form if you are interested in coming, even if you're not sure you can make it! The information will be kept strictly private, and it is very necessary for planning purposes. You will receive an email confirmation that the form has been received.

Screen Name vs Real Name-- it is very important for me to be able to put a screen name with your real name, so I know with whom I'm communicating. If you want to have email updates, as well, please let me know, and I'll set it up!

    Other Information

I will be setting up a bank account for us as soon as possible-- and will have a PayPal number set up as quickly as possible, as well. Donations will be solicitied, to get us started! There will be a financial page with a current financial statement on the web page, available for your view. We will use PayPal as it costs only $.30 per transaction, versus $3-5 for other credit card transactions. At the time of pre-registration, you will also be able to send in your money to a P.O. Box, if PayPal is too complicated.

The website is growing, and I will be linking to articles here on the Vine, so please keep checking back!

    Thank you for coming by!

Did you know that Louisville has one of the largest historic preservation districts in the nation? There are forty five square blocks of charming homes and splendid mansions displaying an impressive variety of architechtural styles from the late 1800s to early 1900s. An entertaining guide shares local lore, legend, and ghostly facts about Old Louisville. For a romantic twist, we can try the tour after the sun goes down, when the gaslights of the old neighborhood bathe the neighborhood in a soft glow!

There are several tour types that we can take, all of which cost $275-- about $24 each, and we can select which tour we wish to take, too, or customize our tour! The tours are 90 minutes in duration.

    Ghosts of Old Louisville
A knowledgeable guide will point out the haunted hot spots, and the tour will include a short walk through historic St. James and Belgravia Courts, the mansions of Millionaire's Row, and a sweet side trip for Bourbon Balls! Listed somewhere as one of the best ghost tours of the country!

    Mansions and Milestones Tour
Wonderful architecture and fascinating history await! Our guide will tell us of the local lore and legend about the famed Southern Exposition of 1883, (attended by my Great-Grandmother), a side tip for Bourbon Balls, and the history of the city!

    Moonshine and Madness Tour
Did you know that Louisville once enjoyed the dubious reputation as America's Sin City, because of the tobacco, bourbon, and horse racing? Learn about Old Louisville's Hot Spots in the Roaring 20's and prohibition in the 30's, ghostly denizens of the past, and enjoy homemade Bourbon Balls!

It seems like Bourbon Balls are high on my list, but they are offered as a part of the tour, and if you're going to come all this way, you may as well taste one, anyway! (har har har) A walking tour, for $15 is also offered!

This would be a great activity for Friday Night!

Since the early 1900's, the Louisville Slugger has been a major component of the World Series Baseball Championship, thrilling fans with its distinctive Crack! Originally owned by Bud Hillerich, the Louisville Slugger is now produced here in Louisville, by the Hillerich and Bradsby Company. Today, the Louisville Slugger is still a fine tradition in baseball, and professional players still order their custom made bats from the wooden bat factory here in Louisville.

The Louisville Slugger Museum is located downtown, with the entrance next to the Giant Slugger Bat. Next to the museum is the factory that produces the bats, where the well-known Louisville Slugger has been made for years! The museum is filled with exhibits, all in one theme, Baseball!

The museum and factory are handicapped accessible, with closed-captioned hearing and listening devices available in the theater. In addition to many fine exhibits, the museum offers several daily shows that have helped the museum to be named the #1 Tourist Spot in town by Nickelodeon. These include:

    • Louisville Slugger Enlists – A live costumed character performance describing how Louisville Slugger pitched during WWII.
    • Tales From the Bat Vault – The Fort Knox of Louisville Slugger, the vault contains models used to create bats for some of baseball's all time greats, including Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, and Hank Aaron.
    • Art & Adventure – Take a tour of the corporate headquarters for a look at the extensive collection of baseball artwork.

Stroll down Louisville's Historic Main Street, on the Louisville Slugger Walk of Fame! This artful extension of the museum and factory begins with a bronze cast of the model bat that the Baseball Greats used, and a bronze home plate with the highlights of their careers in baseball. These players rank among the greatest to ever a grip a bat, and all were under contract with the Louisville Slugger. How many famous players can you remember?

Under renovation, the gift shop offers personalized bats for sale, as well as other baseball memorabilia. In addition, tours of the factory are available hourly, beginning at 9 am! Admissions are as follows:

    Adults-- $10
    Seniors, (60+) -- $9
    Kids, (6-12) -- $5
    Kids, (under 5) – Free

Group rates (20 or more), and special tours are available, during the week, and Saturday, at 9 am, and noon on Sunday! Tours include a package deal with The Belle of Louisville, (Boats and Bats), or with the Frazier International History Museum, (Heroes and Hall of Famers). Participants of group tours receive their own small Louisville Slugger! This would be a grand Sunday idea!

Costs for these tours are $36 per person for the Slugger Museum and a cruise on the Belle, and $27 for the Slugger Museum and the Frazier Historical Museum. Group rates for a single tour are, as a rule, $1 less per admission plus a souvenir bat. (More info to come on the Frazier History Museum!)

Churchill Downs is a 'Must-See' for visitors to Louisville! The Thoroughbred racetrack is most famous for hosting the annual Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks races, and has also hosted The Breeder's Cup. It is ranked as one of the top five Thoroughbred racetracks in North America!

In 1875, John and Henry Churchill leased 80 acres of land to their nephew, Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr., the grandson of explorer William Clark. Colonel Clark was the president of the Louisville Jockey Club and Driving Park Association, which had formed in 1874, and preferred the longer races, such as those seen at Epsom Downs outside of London. Thoroughbred racing was on its way to becoming a national sport, and one of the best known races was called The Kentucky Derby.

Short of cash, Colonel Clark sold the racecourse to a syndicate in 1895, who instituted many changes. The syndicate commissioned the twin spired grandstand, which was named a National Historic Landmark in 1986, shortened the races to the current one and a quarter mile, (2 km), and began the custom of crowning the winner of the Kentucky Derby with a blanket made of roses. In 1902, the syndicate turned the racecourse over to the City of Louisville, who constructed a new club house, to encourage social interaction among the patrons, and began to host other races, such as steeplechase and automobiles.

Through the years, Louisville's 'most exciting 2 minutes in sports' has generated much-needed income for the city, and become a tradition among many peoples in the world. In 2009, Churchill Downs hosted its first ever night race, which is now a regular event. In addition, Churchill Downs has inaugurated the HullbaLOU music Festival, in the latter part of July, to attract additional visitors to the track.

Today, Churchill Downs covers 147 acres, and attracts over 150,000 people for Derby Day, most of which are turned loose in the infield. Box seats for the Derby run in the thousands of dollars, and are greatly prized! The dirt oval main track, on which the Derby is run, is 79 to 80 feet wide and one mile in circumference. The turf track, inside the main track, is 7/8 of a mile in circumference and 80 feet wide. From 2001 to 2005, the entire racecourse has undergone renovation, rebuilding, and rejuvenation, ensuring that the track, the grandstand, the stables, the trackside Café, and other buildings in the park are of top quality with the most modern facilities available.

    Racing
Racing occurs in two meets. The spring meet starts one week before the Derby and continues until early July. The Kentucky Derby is held the first Saturday in May and the Kentucky Oaks is held the day before. The fall meet begins in October, and the Downs closes Thanksgiving weekend in late November.

During the spring meet, the track opens at 11 am, and the first race is at 12:30 pm. The track is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, so this would be either a good Saturday or Sunday afternoon activity. This could be easily combined with a morning session at The Kentucky Derby Museum, on a Saturday, since it is all in one place.

    Group Activities
If we want to go as a group to Churchill Downs, there are several options available. However, please be warned, the more deluxe the accommodations, the more it costs, (naturally).

Private Suites include the price of admission, a private living room area with comfortable seating, a private balcony overlooking the finish line, in-room betting, racing programs, a suite attendant, a buffet of food ranging from hors d'oeuvres to a full meal, and a bar package. Persons with disabilities would have no trouble reaching the box via elevator, and this would offer the most deluxe way to be a 'millionaire for a day'. A dress code is applicable. Costs for this, plus hors d'oeruvres and bar, would range from $80 to $100 per person, for 30-40 people. The number of guests is limited to 40. (I've done this before and it is FUN to get all gussied up, but the costs at the old Henderson racecourse without food were about $20 for as many people as you could cram in. I doubt I can afford this, but I'll gladly set it up for everyone else.)

Reserved Clubhouse Seating includes a reserved seat in a third floor box and a program. Depending on the section, the third floor boxes can easily accommodate from 6 to 12 guests, and handicapped seating is available. Tickets can be purchased in advance for a group—and we could always get a two or three boxes, if we like. Snacks and meals are available throughout the track. Costs range from $5 to $10 per person for admission. Food, drink, and betting must be accomplished under our own steam and would be extra. (I've done this before, too, dressed either very casually, business casually, or all gussied up, and it is FUN.) Again, this can be combined with a The Kentucky Derby Museum morning event for an whole day of fun!

Skye Terrace may be available on our day for our group. This is an area on the second floor with wooden seat-type seating and a balcony to see the races. The price of $10 for adults and $5 per child includes the cost of a race day program. Handicapped seating is available. The view from the balcony is great, but if packed, you can't see doodley.

General Admission knowing that they are going to squeeze you for every penny in your pocket anyway, general admission for a Grandstand Seat, on the 1st floor, or maybe even on the 2nd floor, is only $3 for adults, $1 for seniors, and children are free. Seating is bleacher-type. Both covered and open seating is available, and on a first-come, first-served basis. This can also be combined with a museum tour.

Seniors Day is on June 17 and 24th this year. I doubt we can take advantage of it, (since those are both Fridays, but maybe we'll start early for those that would like to do so?). The $19 ticket price includes admission to the track with a seat in the Millionaires Row Dining Room, a race program, and a chef's table buffet. Millionaire's Row is handicapped accessible and includes table servers. Reservations only, and it requires a Senior's Day Ticket Form.

    On Track Dining

    • Trackside Café – A food court centrally located on the second floor Clubhouse, serving Mexican specialties, Italian pizza, deli-style sandwiches, fresh salads, grilled items, and ice cream.
    • The Paddock Grill – First floor Clubhouse in the Paddock area serving grilled items and other track favorites.
    • Silks and Champions Lounges—both lounges located on the second floor clubhouse and are stand-up bars, casual dining with table service, and a close-up view of the Paddock. Popular on weekends, and are available on a first come, first served basis.
    • Matt Winn Dining Room – a more elegant dining experience, daily with limited seating, reservations recommended.

    Betting --
You can bet as little or as much as you like, just don't bet on what I do, because a bet from me is a kiss of death. In fact, I've bet on 5 out of 6 horses on the whole dang card and lost. See? I have no luck, but once, I bet $2 on a horse named Shagass Bluegrass and won $35, and that was the one and only time that a horse I bet on came in the top three... But, that was harness racing! Maybe, with you there, I'll have better luck!

    Children
Children are welcome and they usually enjoy the excitement! But, if you don't want to take your child to the track, but want to take your child to the Kentucky Derby Museum, which is definitely worth it, we will have a children's activity planned for that afternoon, with transportation, so don't worry! Transportation will be via rented van or private car and is not official, so, please, don't anybody be requiring additional insurance. I will drive, (or my husband), and we'll get the kiddos back to the sitter where they can go to Puzzle's Fun Dome or something else fun!

For both tourists and natives of Kentucky alike, a cruise on the famous historic steamship, The Belle of Louisville, is an adventure! The 95 year old Belle is a National Historic Landmark, and reminiscent of long ago days on the lazy Ohio River.

Built in 1914, The Belle was first known as the Idlewald, and was launched at Pittsburg, on the Allegheny River. Needing only 5' of draft, the Belle first operated as a passenger boat and cargo hold at Memphis, TN, then became a tramp ship, navigating the Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, and Mississippi river systems. Tramp ships carried passengers and cargo, and the Belle's shallow draft allowed her to navigate all but the shallowest streams.

Chartered by the Rose Island Company, the Belle arrived in Louisville in 1931, and ran trips from Fontaine Ferry Amusement Park and Rose Island Resort, located 14 miles upstream. During WWII, the Belle was specially equipped to push oil barges up and down the Ohio River, to and from the busy Jefferson Boat Company in Jeffersonville, IN, across the river from Louisville. (The boat company was charged with building many of the LST's used in the D-Day invasion.) The boat also served as a floating USO for troops stationed up and down the Mississippi River.

After the war, the Belle plied the waterways of the eastern US, carrying passengers and cargo, reaching as far west as Omaha, NE and as far north as Stillwater, MN. By 1962, the Belle was in sorry shape and headed for the scrap yard, when Jefferson County Judge/Executive Marlow Cook purchased the boat for $32,000. The boat was re-christened the Belle of Louisville, and underwent restoration. In 1963, the Belle of Louisville participated in its first steamboat race, against the Delta Queen, and an annual Derby Tradition was established.

Although her name and appearance has changed over the years, (a new hull replaced the rotting wooden hull a few years back), the Belle of Louisville is the oldest working steamboat in operation in the US, and she has a steam powered calliope that plays old favorite songs along the waterfront, deafening all passersby. The music can be heard for quite a distance along the river!

Lunch and dinner cruises are available through the summer, and are reasonably priced. The lunch and dinner cruises, served in the open air dining room, are a tasty buffet, and weather appropriate, casual attire is recommended. Snacks and other lighter fair are also available during the cruise, as well as alcoholic and soda beverages. During your cruise, you can sit in the stern and enjoy watching the paddles as they push the boat through the water, tour the engine room to see the huge pistons, (now powered by diesel, but once powered by coal), or sit in the bow, to catch a cool breeze as the City of Louisville passes by. On board musicians play Dixieland, and "Oh, Susannah!" is a favorite among guests. Come watch the banjo music, and enjoy the songs sung by a barbershop quartet!

Prices range from $18 for a non-meal cruise per adult, (seniors $17), children 3-12 are $9, while children under 3 are free. The Lunch cruise is priced from $29 for adults to $19 for a child's lunch. The evening buffet dinner starts at $39 to $23 for children, and $20 per adult for the evening dance cruise. Children are welcome! The dance cruise is so much fun! You can dress up for the special occasion, or dress casually!

The cruises are not always booked, but to be safe, it is best to reserve your tickets. The boat leaves promptly, and missing the boat is no fun at all! Parking is available within walking distance if you arrive about 30 minutes ahead of your cruise time, or if enjoy jogging, you can park some distance from the wharf and arrive later.

Specific times for cruises will have to be checked later, as the website is not updated, (as of 1/1/11).

This activity is suitable for all ages, and for those with disabilities. Pets are not welcome, although service animals are allowed. A small discount is available for groups, and an area may be reserved, but it is in the center of the boat and the best rides are found along the sides, in pretty weather. The current scheduling indicates that Saturday cruises are for lunch, while dinner cruises are reserved for Friday Nights. Nothing anywhere talks about the dance cruise-- but if we can do that, it is so very pretty on the Belle at night! :-)

Visit the Belle of Louisville for more information!

Listen to the Belle of Louisville's Calliope!

    Thanks for stopping by!

No matter how you pronounce it, the city of Louisville is a great place to visit! Centrally located for the Midwest area of the US, Louisville is the crossroads of Middle America—and one that you'll enjoy! For this reason, YOU are cordially invited to attend a VineMeet in June, 2011 at Louisville, Kentucky!

    Why Louisville, Kentucky?
Louisville is within 500 miles of many major US cities, and is served by several interstate highways as well as Standiford Field, Louisville's International Airport. Located along the Ohio River, Louisville is home to Churchill Downs and the famous Kentucky Derby—known as the most exciting two minutes in sports! Louisville is influenced both by Southern and Midwestern cultures, and is often referred to as the northernmost Southern city, or the southernmost Northern city in the Midwest. Louisville's blend of cultures and diversity of international cultures brings a unique flavor to any gathering!

    Mileage to major cities:

    • Atlanta, GA – 415 miles
    • Birmingham, AL – 364 miles
    • Buffalo, NY – 541 miles
    • Charleston, WV – 251 miles
    • Charlotte, NC – 475 miles
    • Chicago, IL – 297 miles
    • Cleveland, OH – 355 miles
    • Columbus, OH – 214 miles
    • Detroit, MI – 363 miles
    • Indianapolis, IN – 114 miles
    • Kansas City, MO – 515 miles
    • Memphis, TN – 383 miles
    • Milwaukee, WI – 396 miles
    • Nashville, TN – 175 miles
    • Pittsburgh, PA – 393 miles
    • St. Louis, MO – 261 miles

The population of the Metro Area is over 1 million, and with the consolidation of the Metro Government, Louisville is the 16th largest city in the US. Yet, the cost of living is 10% lower than the national average. As a convention area, or for a group gathering, the Louisville Area is both fun and affordable!

    Family or Single?
There are plenty of activities for people of all ages and stages—we'll have family-type activities as well as fun for the more swinging set! If there are enough of us to go as a group, we'll be able to get discounts for group activities. You will be able to pick and choose what suits your needs and desires—and whether or not you wish to go with a group, or select your own agenda. You will be able to make advance reservations, if you wish—although some reservations, (and payment), will be required ahead of time for particular group activities—but, if you just like to 'wing it', that can be accomplished, as well.

    Meet Your Tour Guide
Hi! My name is Dowser here on the Vine, and Marsha Meyer every place else!

I have volunteered to make arrangements, collect payments for group activities, and plan our VineMeet fun. I'll set up a specific email, post office box, and everyone will have access to my phone, etc. If I can figure out how to do it, I'll put up a web page, somehow… Until then, I'll write a series of articles about all the fun things to do here in Louisville, and gather input from polls, etc. Here is what I'm thinking about:

    1. Wish I had the money to front all of this, but I'm just a regular gal, who works part time, and doesn't have all that much $$ myself—so, we'll all pay as we go, unless there are specific activities for which we need to collect some up-front money! In any case, we'll divide it among all of us, to keep costs as low as possible!

    2. Rent a van for transportation for those who may wish to fly in, but not have the expense of renting a car. We'll split expenses! This will include airport pick up for those who don't want to rent a car for the weekend. I'll do my best!

    3. Babysitters and specific children's activities will be available, should parents want to do something without the kids—but there are plenty of things to that are "Family Friendly"!. Again, we can all split expenses! (If I can talk my college-aged stepdaughter to help, we'll be in great shape!)

    4. I'll book a block of rooms at one of the hotels on the east side—mid to low price. Those that want to stay in more deluxe accommodations will be welcome to do so. All the hotels are within easy walking distance of one another, as well as restaurants, shopping, etc.

    5. Campgrounds are nearby as well—and I'll be sure to include information about the various campgrounds, for those who enjoy the camping experience!

    6. For those that are driving in, we'll have maps galore! If those that drive don't mind, maybe we can carpool!

    7. We'll have a hospitality room available for everyone—a place to gather, meet for group activities, and visit—again, stuff will be available for kids, (a good movie? crafts?). A small registration fee will be collected to help meet expenses.

    8. Maps to a really good liquor store will be provided, but it is BYOB. Remember that Kentucky Bourbon is inexpensive here! i.e. locally grown.

    9. I'll include information about day care for pets, and information on hotels that accept pets, as well!

    10. Everyone will check in at the VineMeet Desk—you'll get maps, driving directories, itineraries, and your customized tickets to events. We'll work all that out together!

    Fun things to do:
What is there to do in Louisville? LOTS! The list below is a sampling of some of the activities that are available! We'll get more into specifics of costs, menus, age appropriate activities, activities for those of us with disabilities, and other details later, but as a short list:
